چکیده

Estimates of the deuterium abundance in quasar absorbers are reviewed, including a brief account of incorrect claims published by the author and a brief review of the problem of hydrogen contamination. It is concluded that the primordial abundance may be universal with a value (D/H)P ≈ 10 , within about a factor of two, corresponding to ΩBh 2 0.7 ≈ 0.02 or η10 ≈ 2.7 in the Standard Big Bang. This agrees with current limits on primordial helium, YP ≤ 0.243, which are shown to be surprisingly insensitive to models of stellar enrichment. It also agrees with a tabulated sum of the total density of baryons in observed components. Much lower primordial deuterium (≈ 2 × 10) is also possible but disagrees with currently estimated helium abundances; the larger baryon density in this case fits better with current models of the Lyman-α forest but requires the bulk of the baryons to be in some currently uncounted form.

A Realistic Determination of the Error on the Primordial Helium Abundance: Steps Toward Non-Parametric Nebular Helium Abundances

UMN-TH-2311/04 FTPI-MINN-04/22 astro-ph/0405588 June 2004 Using the WMAP determination of the baryon density, the standard model of big bang nucleosynthesis yields relatively precise predictions of the primordial light element abundances. Currently there are two significantly different observational determinations of the primordial helium abundance, and, if only statistical errors in He abundan...

Cosmic Deuterium or a Hydrogen Interloper?

Two groups have independently reported the possible detection of extragalactic deu-terium in the absorption spectrum of the same high redshift, low metalicity QSO. Although the high value for the inferred deuterium abundance poses no problems for cosmology (i.e., big bang nucleosynthesis), it is in apparent conflict with solar system observations of deu-terium and helium-3. This latter inconsis...

Primordial Deuterium Abundance and Cosmic Baryon Density

The comparison of cosmic abundances of the light elements with the density of baryonic stars and gas in the universe today provides a critical test of big bang theory and a powerful probe of the nature of dark matter. A new technique allows determination of cosmic deuterium abundances in quasar absorption clouds at large redshift, allowing a new test of big bang homogeneity in diverse, very dis...

Cosmological Deuterium Abundance and the Baryon Density of the Universe

Standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBNS) promises accurate predictions of the primordial abundances of deuterium, helium-3, helium-4 and lithium-7 as a function of a single parameter. Previous measurements have nearly always been interpreted as confirmation of the model (1). Here we present a measurement of the deuterium to hydrogen ratio (D/H) in a newly discovered high redshift metal-poor gas...

Anionic Hydrogen Cluster Ions as a New Form of Condensed Hydrogen.

We report the first experimental observation of negatively charged hydrogen and deuterium cluster ions, H_{n}^{-} and D_{n}^{-}, where n≥5. These anions are formed by an electron addition to liquid helium nanodroplets doped with molecular hydrogen or deuterium. The ions are stable for at least the lifetime of the experiment, which is several tens of microseconds. Only anions with odd values of ...
